Getting started

From a fresh install to your first captured frame.

1. Install the application

Download the package from the download page, check its SHA-256, and unzip it somewhere you can find again. There is no installer wizard and no background service of ours: the application is an executable, and the driver is a file inside the package.

The first start asks three questions: interface language, licence, and workspace mode. You can leave the licence field empty: capture works without a licence key, which is enough to follow this page. Protocol and Modbus decoding is a Professional feature - without it those two views still list the frames, with every decoded value masked as ****.

2. Choose the ports to watch

Press New Monitor and select the serial ports you want to capture. Nothing is opened and nothing is reserved: the driver attaches a filter, so a port that another program is already using can still be selected.

  • The port list is read from the system, including ports added after the application started.
  • Monitoring several ports at once is allowed; the views show them together.
  • The Problems panel reports a port that could not be attached, without stopping the others.

3. Start monitoring

Press Start. If the driver service is not running yet, the application offers to install or start it and asks for administrator rights through the usual elevation prompt.

When monitoring is running and no traffic has arrived yet, the view shows a waiting state instead of an error. Frames appear as soon as the device talks.

4. Read the capture

The default workspace opens Table, Hex Dump, Line and Terminal views. Switch with the tabs; the capture keeps running and the port is never reopened.

  • Table is the fastest way to scan: one row per frame with sequence, time, direction, port, length, hex and ASCII.
  • Hex Dump is for looking at offsets and byte patterns.
  • Line groups a frame into IRP, status and data lines.
  • Modbus and Protocol add decoded fields once those views are enabled from the Views menu. Without a Professional licence they list the same frames with the decoded values masked as ****.

5. Keep what you found

Save the capture as a .cms session if you need to reopen it later, or export the visible view as CSV, HTML or text. Redirect writes new rows to a file while the capture continues.

Stop only stops capture: the frames you already have stay in place until you clear them.

Next: the driver

Read what the kernel driver does and does not do before you install it on a production machine.
